Brestfeeding mothers often ask themselves whether their baby drank enough and how much. MilkSense by SML Success might be the solution! This Israeli company has spent the last few years working on this revolutionary device. It might look complicated, but actually is very simple. MilkSense measures the amount of milk that your baby drinks in milliliters and notes on which breast the measurement took place. As a mother, you immediately know how much milk you have passed on to your child. The ergonomically shaped device is placed on the upper side of the breast, and after breastfeeding your baby, this is done once again. That’s all!
A portable scale to measure your baby is included. Another unique thing I want to point out is the MilkSense PC Suite, software that translates the measurements into a detailed analyses of the nutrition and growth of your baby. In the scene of the upcoming World Brestfeeding Week, this should be a great product for mothers that want more certainty. At the professional fair this product won the Baby Innovation Award at Kind und Jugend, I am looking forward to seeing this product being introduced on Dutch market!
After various countries decided to ban the hormone-disrupting substance BPA (Bisphenol A) from the baby bottle industry, I see an increasing amount of alternatives. First of all, the glass bottle has reappeared. Glass is a natural product, it can sustain high temperatures and apparently, fluids stay hot for a longer time in a glass bottle. Moreover, a glass bottle is more hygienic and no scratches will appear on it. However…it can be broken, obviously. New alternatives are made of stainless steel, just like this Pacific Babybottle. It is a thermal baby bottle made of high-quality isolated stainless steel, that causes a ‘clean taste’. After all, stainless steel has already been used in many restaurant kitchens! These extraordinary bottles can keep fluids hot or cold for up to ten hours. The bottles have a wide neck and a convenient calibration on the inside. These bottles are perfectly suited for expressing, storing and feeding breast milk. And another good thing to know: it is strong and lightweight and will last at least five years, so it is durable! When your children get older, you can simply put a drinking cap or sports cap on it! The jury for the Baby Innovation Award thought it was worth a nomination.
The Negenmaandenbeurs (‘Nine Months Fair’) has not even come to a close, but we have already had such wonderful days! First of all, directly after the opening, we announced the winners of the BabyStuf Baby Innovation Award at our stand. Thanks to their unique innovations, the six winners were granted their awards and certificates. The winner of the Ouders van Nu Consumer Award was even offered a full page advertisement in Ouders van Nu (‘Today’s Parents’). Everyone had a great time! Immediately afterwards, the hectics started as broadcasting company RTL 4 appeared to make a news item on the Sirona Cybex and the new isize-standard for children’s car seats, that is expected to be implemented at the end of this year. The isize-standard states that children should be transported facing backwards as much as possible, in which not the weight but the length of the child is of importance, hence the name. Children’s car seat Sirona by Cybex is even ahead of this standard. That evening, the RTL 4 News extensively discussed this new seat as well as the standard. During lunchtime, AT5 a regional broadcasting company from Amsterdam, also visited us. Fortunately they had announced their visit, so the winners were also present to tell something about their innovations for mums and their babies. The item was aired immediately that same afternoon. When I returned home, I got a phone call from the Algemeen Dagblad (Dutch national newspaper) to discuss the new isize-standard. My answers were incorporated nicely in an informative article that was posted in the Algemeen Dagblad yesterday. Last week I was also interviewed by HDC Media for their weekend-supplement Vrij. We discussed the Mama Masterclasses we offer here at BabyStuf. You see; hardy any time for spotting new gadgets on the fair, but I had a wonderful week!
The winners of the BabyStuf Baby Innovation Award have been announced! The votes from the jury, as well as from the mothers at the ‘Ouders van Nu’ jury day and all the online voters have each made up one third of the votes for the final decision. This year, the awards go to: Sirona by Cybex; the car seat that can be used from birth up to 18 kilograms, in which your child is seated with its back towards the front. The IVM 150 Smart Babymonitor by Alecto; the first plug and play video intercom that is operated using an app. The BeSafe Pregnancy IZI FIX; a car safety belt for pregnant women. The Original Ba; a bottle-holder that is easy to use for babies themselves from a young age. The Bednest; a cosleeper that enables you to let your baby sleep close to your bed in a safe way. Milestone Baby Cards; cards that enable you to visually capture the very first milestones your child achieves. And to conclude: the special ‘Ouders van Nu’ Consumer Award was for the YoYo buggy by BabyZen; a very easily foldable buggy that you can take with you as hand luggage in an airplane.
We are now getting ready for the presentation of the awards at the Negenmaandenbeurs (‘Nine Months Fair’), where the BabyStuf team will praise the winners. All nominees get the opportunity to demonstrate their product in the mornings. And perhaps even they will have to go to the makeup room during lunchtime, as AT5, the regional broadcasting company from Amsterdam, will attend the presentation to ask the winners what makes the winning products so special!
The hallway of our office is full of boxes filled with the 18 nominated baby products for the BabyStuf Baby Innovation Award selection, which have just been delivered by the courier sent by Ouders van Nu (‘Today’s Parents’). Immediately an essential question pops up as we had just cleaned out the office: where do we put all this? Merely a small logistical problem. Much more fun is to look back on the Ouders van Nu Jury Day. It was a successful day where a group of Ouders van Nu-readers gathered at the head office to take a critical look at all the new products. After a short introduction with coffee and tea, the moms started their task, armed with a pen and an evaluation form. And so they did very well! Every time again I notice that real moms call on their duty so seriously, whether it is about giving product reviews or the judging of the new baby must-haves like today. Critical questions were asked, strollers were folded in and out, carriers were tried out, toys were carefully looked at and baby bottles were tested with water. Nothing got through the judges without careful reviewing and that made it an interesting day! Also it made it an important day for us as we take into account the mom’s reviews, the votes of the jury and the online voters for one third each of the final assessment. Online voting is still possible at www.babyinnovationaward.nl. When you participate you can also win one of these beautiful products!
The morning ended with a lunch and all moms received a well filled goodie bag and a ticket to for the Negenmaandenbeurs (‘Nine Months Fair’). On this exhibition you can admire the winners of the BabyStuf Baby Innovation Award and see live demonstrations of these extraordinary innovations. So if you decide to visit, do stop by!
When you’re in the car as a pregnant woman, it is always a fuzz. The seatbelt never feels comfortable and the sharp edges can be extremely irritating. But even worse, you and your unborn baby are not safe! This wrong position can lead to ‘sub-marining’; this is the effect that you slide underneath the waist belt in case of a crash situation, read: collision. I have seen shots of a crash test and you’d be shocked. It is clear that this phenomenon can seriously injure you and your child. That is why the jury of the Baby Innovation Award and I were very happy with the BeSafe Pregnant iZi FIX and why this great product was nominated. This useful tool makes sure that the seatbelt always fits right! You place the mat on the chair and attach this with a belt to the back part of the seat. You can attach the BeSafe with Isofix on the back seats. Then you sit down, guide the belt through the little strap on the front side under the belly and attach the belt and voilà, mom is safely seated. Because of this simple installation you can easily take the BeSafe Pregnant iZi FIX with you in another car. Extremely useful and extremely safe.
To follow up my last blog, I’d like to introduce the nominations that will compete for the most wanted award! In the category Mobility the nominees are: The Greentom Upp stroller; made of recycled syntethic materials, the YoYo buggy of BabyZen; super quick foldable and can be taken with you as hand luggage on a flight, The Sirona car seat of Cybex; back- or forward facing and capable of 360 degrees rotation, and the NJOY UP Bubble; the first buggy with a reversible seat.
In the category Travel & Safety the nominees are: Stokke Carrier; can be used in two positions, on your chest or on your back, IVM 150 Smart Babymonitor of Hesdo; the first plug and play image baby intercom that works with an app (compatible with smartphones or tablets) and the carrying bag Travel Stowaway of Ergobaby; made of recycled materials and foldable to a little bag.
In the category Care: Digitub baby bath of BabyLabels; with a digital balance and thermometer built-in, the PacaPod caring bag; with external compartments and the Besafe Pregnancy iZi FIX safety belt; extra security and comfort in the car for a pregnant belly.

Pfff. Not only the elections in the US are behind us, our own elections are too! Yesterday morning, after a bad night’s sleep I got up early, picked up our intern Hanae from the train station and went to the NH hotel in Naarden with a car full of baby products for D-day; the day of the jury. Every year again it is a huge organization, but oh so much fun to do! Once arrived, we presented all entries as good as possible with as many available hands as possible (thank you to Trix, Hanae and our drivers) on a couple of big tables. An hour later, the jury came in excited, apart from one or two, a whole bunch of new women like Yaelle, Marianne and Mira with their PR and Fashion agencies, Catelijne and Thea of the consumers magazines Ouders van nu (Today’s Parents) and Kinderen (Children) and sidekick Patricia van Liemt of Qmusic, as a mom and author. We were accompanied by Mieke from Veiligheid.nl (Safety) who pointed us at possible risks of products and by Janneke who critically looked at the designs and user-friendliness. And well, I am here to keep all and everyone on the right path and to emphasize that it is all about innovation, however beautiful the products may look, it’s all about innovation, innovation, innovation! The morning was reserved to look through every product, touch it and try it, the afternoon was reserved for requested demos of products that were in the category: ‘extra complicated’. After this ‘product speed dating’, it was time to compare products but also to fiercely discuss them. We closed the day late in the afternoon with 19 wonderful nominations divided into 6 categories. This afternoon the nominated are informed and from tomorrow on the nominations can be found on http://www.babyinnovationaward.nl. So I cannot spoil it for you. And after this it’s up to the moms and the Ouders van Nu jury day, as well as the online voters!
We are getting ready for the Baby Innovation Award 2013 by BabyStuf! The great annual event for the baby product industry that, besides presenting many awards, also brings new and unknown possibilities to attract attention to innovative baby products. Especially in times like these, innovation is essential. Speaking of which, also our election is renewed on five points and made professional steps forward. To begin with, the jury welcomes a few new members. This year there are representatives of: radio QMusic, PR and fashion agencies, Veiligheid.nl, Ouders van Nu, Kinderen, KEK Mama and design agency Buro Raak. Besides this, we thought it was time for a Mom Jury day, so moms can appoint their favourite products in daily life. Ouders van Nu will be responsible for this part and there is a special Ouders van Nu public prize linked to this. Also the winners will be chosen in a different way. The jury, Mom Jury Day and the online voters decide about them together. So there is a better balance between the jury, experiences of consumers and online voters. Moreover, voters from abroad will be excluded. Furthermore, attention will be given in an interactive way to the winners on the Negenmaandenbeurs (Nine Months fair). And to conclude, we will present the new logo that will be shown on all products and media utterances here.
Are you interested to participate in the elections? That is only possible until November 1st 2012. Participants can count on great promotion via trade journal BabyWereld, BabyStuf and the accompanying social media. http://www.babyinnovationaward.nl, The Nine Month Fair and Ouders van Nu!
